Downtown Waco — Silos & Brazos Riverfront
brick storefronts · Magnolia shoppers · independent shops · cocktail stops · Brazos riverfront
7.3/10
Stay here for the most Waco you can enjoy on foot.
Downtown wins for sightseeing access, hotel quality and character, but costs more than the city median and has fewer doorstep options than its reputation suggests.

Downtown makes a short Waco visit feel connected rather than car-dependent. Austin Avenue brings independent shops and historic storefronts; the Silos, Dr Pepper Museum and riverfront give your days a natural shape. Recent local recommendations steer visitors downtown for walkable restaurants, bars and boutiques, not just Magnolia shopping.
Choose it for a first visit, a couples’ weekend or evenings without driving. The important catch is riverfront construction: the Riverwalk between Jackson Avenue and Baylor Law School is closed, with completion estimated for January 2028. Do not build your itinerary around an uninterrupted riverside walk toward Baylor. Skip downtown if quiet matters more than walking out to dinner.
- Best for
- first-time visitorscouplestravelers without a carmuseums and culture
- Skip it if
- Uninterrupted quiet is your priority; You want a continuous riverfront walk toward Baylor
- Getting around
- Walk the downtown sights; buses connect at Eighth and Mary, and the LaSalle Circle Shuttle serves the Silos and museum corridor; use a rental car, rideshare or booked transfer from ACT, or a car from GRK; distant DFW has prebooked road transfers.
- After dark
- Austin Avenue and Franklin Avenue have an evening bar scene; Truelove adds karaoke and drag, with recent locals identifying it as an LGBTQ-friendly gathering place.
- Where to look
- Mary Avenue, Second–Sixth Streets. A useful walking corridor between the Silos and River Square; suits sightseeing weekends with meals and shops on foot.Washington Avenue at University Parks. Choose this riverfront end for bridge strolls and access to downtown dining, rather than staying closest to the Silos.
