Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur on a budget: Chinatown

Updated October 20, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Chinatown & Merdeka Square is the budget pick because it combines the strongest hotel value with useful trains, food and heritage outings. Chow Kit & Jalan TAR comes second for local meals and reasonable hotel value. Chinatown is the easier all-round choice; Chow Kit asks more attention to your exact street.

Petaling Street, Jalan Sultan and Jalan Tun H. S. Lee give you old coffee shops, temples and restored shophouses rather than a wall of malls. Central Market and Merdeka Square make an easy heritage outing, while cocktail bars and music venues mean this is no longer just a backpacker base.

Chow Kit and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman suit travelers who would rather browse produce stalls and textile shops than spend the afternoon in another mall. KL Sentral is the practical choice when airport transfers, intercity trains or repeated cross-city journeys shape the trip. Step into Brickfields and the character changes: Jalan Tun Sambanthan has South Indian meals, sari shops and Little India's decorated streets. It is more than somewhere to change trains, but transport remains the reason to sleep here.

Jalan Bukit Bintang puts malls, the MRT and monorail at your feet, with Jalan Alor's food stalls and Changkat's bars close by. This is our strongest default for a short first visit: you can shop, eat late and head elsewhere by train without planning your day around car journeys.

KLCC is the polished, tower-facing version of Kuala Lumpur: Suria KLCC, the Petronas Twin Towers and a proper park with children's play areas.
