Where to stay in Honolulu for shopping: Ala Moana & Kakaʻako

Updated October 16, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Ala Moana & Kakaʻako takes first place for shopping, with Ala Moana Center anchoring the stay and Ward Village adding another outing. Waikīkī Beach Walk is runner-up for Kalākaua Avenue and shopping closer to the beach. Choose between mall-centered days and a more continuous visitor-oriented walking strip.

Ala Moana works as a practical city base: the shopping center, beach park and bus connections replace Waikīkī's beachfront promenade. Kakaʻako adds a different outing, with Ward Village dining and the murals, cafés and bars around SALT. These are neighboring districts, not one continuous pedestrian strip; staying by the mall does not put every Kakaʻako restaurant on your doorstep.

    Getting around
Ala Moana Center is a major bus interchange; 42, E and W use Ala Moana Boulevard, including the direct HNL W Line; walk to the mall and beach, then bus or taxi farther into Kakaʻako.
    After dark
Plan evenings around Ward Village or SALT rather than expecting one continuous late-night strip.

Stay around Lewers Street, Beach Walk and Kalākaua Avenue for the easiest version of Waikīkī: beach time, shopping and dinner without organising transport. Royal Hawaiian Center and Beach Walk add Hawaiian music and cultural activities to the retail strip, so there is something beyond shopping on the doorstep.

Kūhiō Avenue and the streets down to Kūhiō Beach give you Waikīkī at its most useful: casual meals, beach access and buses rather than a self-contained resort bubble. The beach's semi-protected swimming sections appeal to families, while Kalākaua Avenue supplies the promenade and shopping. Koa Avenue and the Kapahulu end put established LGBTQ+ bars within walking distance.

Kālia Road and the Ala Wai Boat Harbor side of Waikīkī feel more resort-oriented than the streets around Kūhiō Beach. Kahanamoku Beach and Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon make beach-and-water days straightforward, while Ala Moana offers another direction for shopping. Families can spend much of a day here without moving very far.

Beyond Kapahulu Avenue, the pace changes from shopping strip to park-and-beach routine. Kapiʻolani Park, the aquarium and Kaimana Beach favor morning walks, swimming and time outdoors. The Gold Coast stretch of Kalākaua Avenue feels less commercial than central Waikīkī, making this a strong choice for couples who want some separation from the busiest streets.

Ko Olina is a resort enclave on Oʻahu's leeward coast, not a Honolulu neighborhood in the everyday sense. Four sheltered lagoons, a coastal path and golf set the rhythm: swim, walk, eat and repeat. Families and couples who deliberately want a stay-put holiday will get much more from it than travelers using their room as a launchpad for Honolulu.
