Axel's take: 8.5/10

A dependable downtown base where cleanliness, friendly staff and location do the heavy lifting. a practical 4-star chain hotel near City Hall, scored for what it is.

This practical 4-star DoubleTree is a strong pick for exploring central Toronto without needing a luxury hotel. St Patrick subway station, City Hall and the Eaton Centre are close by, and recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. The indoor pool, sauna and gym round out a useful city-hotel package. We'd choose it for a straightforward sightseeing or business stay.

The main compromise is space: some standard rooms feel compact, though suites offer more room. Some guests also mention hallway or street noise, so light sleepers should request a quieter, higher-floor room. Parking costs extra, and breakfast is not automatically included. We'd skip it if generous rooms, distinctive design or guaranteed quiet matter more than convenience.

• Best for: car-free city breaks; downtown business trips; visitors to nearby hospitals and universities

• Watch out for: some compact standard rooms; occasional street and hallway noise; parking and breakfast cost extra

• Location: Walkable base near City Hall, Eaton Centre and St Patrick subway station.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds; standard-room space varies, with larger suites available.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, despite occasional housekeeping misses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive sustained praise, particularly in the restaurant.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, sauna, gym, restaurant and free Wi-Fi cover the essentials well.

• Fees and surprises: Paid parking has a six-foot clearance; breakfast may be extra and an incidental deposit applies.
