Axel's take: 8.2/10

Generous rooms and rooftop extras make this a strong budget base, despite dated surroundings. a simple independent budget hotel near Sasazuka, scored for what it is.

Himalaya Cloud is a simple independent budget hotel that puts its strongest selling point inside the rooms: unusually generous space for Tokyo. The official site lists king rooms from 27 square meters, and recent Expedia and Agoda guests repeatedly praise roomy bathrooms, cleanliness and helpful staff. The rooftop terrace, with complimentary drinks and snacks, adds genuine value. It’s a strong pick if you prefer room to spread out over a polished lobby.

The trade-off is an older building outside the main sightseeing hubs. Sasazuka and Hatagaya stations are roughly six to seven minutes away on foot, so expect transit rather than doorstep attractions. Some recent guests flag worn carpets or musty smells, although cleanliness feedback remains predominantly positive. Reception has limited hours and housekeeping is on request. We’d skip it if you want full-service attention or consistently fresh interiors.

• Best for: couples wanting a larger room; budget travelers comfortable using transit; families choosing Japanese-style rooms

• Watch out for: dated common areas and occasional musty smells; limited reception and on-request housekeeping; transit needed for major sightseeing hubs

• Location: Local restaurants and shops nearby; Sasazuka and Hatagaya stations are about six to seven minutes away on foot.

• Rooms: King rooms start at 27 square meters; large beds and spacious bathrooms are recurring strengths.

• Cleanliness: Mostly praised, but recent reports of stained carpets and musty smells suggest some inconsistency.

• Service: Staff are frequently praised; reception is limited-hours, with advance contact advised for arrivals after 8 p.m.

• Amenities: Rooftop terrace, complimentary drinks and snacks, free Wi-Fi and paid laundry; housekeeping is on request.

• Fees and surprises: Accommodation tax may be payable separately; extra beds and laundry cost extra, and there is no onsite parking.
