#3 of 9 hotels in Haymarket & Chinatown by Axel's take. Haymarket & Chinatown is #3 of 11 places to stay in Sydney. The best hotels in Haymarket & Chinatown, ranked · Where to stay in Sydney

Axel's take: 8.3/10

A characterful Sydney base, with comfortable rooms and rooftop-access caveats. an upscale heritage boutique hotel in Chippendale, scored for what it is.

The Old Clare is an upscale heritage boutique hotel spanning a former pub and brewery offices in Chippendale. It’s a strong pick for travelers who prefer distinctive design and a lively restaurant neighborhood to conventional luxury. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, generously sized rooms and helpful staff. Central Station is a short walk away, and Kensington Street’s dining options are right outside.

The trade-offs matter at this level: recent guests mention nighttime bar noise, occasional dusty details and bathrooms with limited privacy in some layouts. Don’t make guaranteed pool time the reason you book. Guests report seasonal and private-event closures of the rooftop pool and bar; the hotel also warns that rooftop hours depend on weather and events. We’d choose it for neighborhood exploring, but skip it for reliably quiet nights or uninterrupted resort-style facilities.

  • Best for: design-minded couples; restaurant and bar explorers; travelers using Central Station

  • Watch out for: nighttime bar noise; limited bathroom privacy in some rooms; seasonal and private-event rooftop closures

  • Location: Walkable Chippendale setting beside Kensington Street dining, a short walk from Central Station.

  • Rooms: Distinctive heritage layouts and comfortable beds; check bathroom privacy and request a quieter room.

  • Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings, tempered by occasional recent reports of dust and missed details.

  • Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a consistent strength across sites.

  • Amenities: Rooftop pool and bar, gym and Clare Bar dining; confirm rooftop availability for your dates.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; Booking.com lists a credit-card surcharge, and rooftop access can be restricted.
