Axel's take: 7.3/10

Choose it for beach access and friendly staff, not polished rooms. a simple, older beachfront hotel on Tybee Island, scored for what it is.

Hotel Tybee is a simple, older beachfront hotel whose strongest selling point is its location near the sand, pier, restaurants and shops. It's a good pick for a beach-first break rather than a stylish hotel stay. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff, while two outdoor pools, a splash pad and a seasonal tiki bar give families reasons to linger beyond the beach.

The trade-off is inconsistent upkeep. Recent reviews mix clean, comfortable stays with recurring complaints about sandy floors, missed housekeeping and worn fixtures. You pay for the location more than the room finish. The hotel also charges a mandatory nightly parking-and-amenities fee, and lower-floor ocean views can be obstructed. We'd skip it if dependable housekeeping and fresh interiors matter more than beach convenience.

• Best for: families wanting pools and beach access; beachgoers who prefer walking to restaurants

• Watch out for: uneven housekeeping and dated rooms; mandatory parking-and-amenities fee; obstructed ocean views on lower floors

• Location: On Tybee Island, not in central Savannah; beach, pier, dining and shops are close by.

• Rooms: Functional rather than polished; recent guests mention worn finishes alongside comfortable beds.

• Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but missed cleaning and sandy floors recur across sites.

• Service: Friendly staff are a consistent strength; housekeeping follow-through is less reliable.

• Amenities: Two outdoor pools, a splash pad, seasonal tiki bar, beach chairs and loaner bicycles.

• Fees and surprises: The official site lists a mandatory nightly parking-and-amenities fee covering one vehicle per room; pet fees also apply.
