Axel's take: 8.0/10

A strong Liberdade base for friendly service, not modern rooms. a traditional, no-frills mid-range hotel in Liberdade, scored for what it is.

Nikkey Palace is a traditional, no-frills mid-range hotel whose main attraction is being right in Liberdade, surrounded by Japanese restaurants and shops, with the metro a short walk away. It's a strong pick if neighborhood access matters more than contemporary design. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently favor the staff, while recent Tripadvisor reviews also praise the welcome. Breakfast is included, with Japanese options giving it more character than a standard city-hotel buffet.

The trade-off is an aging building: dated rooms and small maintenance faults recur in guest feedback, although overall cleanliness ratings remain positive. Breakfast earns both enthusiasm and complaints about variety. We'd choose it for a practical neighborhood stay, but skip it if fresh interiors and consistently polished facilities are priorities.

• Best for: travelers exploring Liberdade; Japanese-speaking guests; short city stays

• Watch out for: dated rooms and uneven maintenance; mixed breakfast feedback; parking costs extra

• Location: In the heart of Liberdade, near Japanese dining, shops and metro stations.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned rooms with Wi-Fi; the official site lists standard rooms at roughly 25 square meters.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive aggregate ratings, despite some individual complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength; Japanese-language assistance is reported.

• Amenities: Included buffet breakfast, restaurant, spa and sauna; reserve treatments ahead.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is charged separately; confirm spa access and treatment charges before booking.
