Axel's take: 7.0/10

Helpful staff and spacious rooms, but age and nightlife noise limit the appeal. An older, no-frills 3-star on lively Rua Augusta, scored for what it is.

Pan Americano is an older, no-frills 3-star on Rua Augusta: a practical base rather than a hotel to linger in. We'd consider it for nearby Frei Caneca events or a nightlife-focused trip. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, roomy accommodation and convenient location. Breakfast often earns compliments, and an outdoor pool is a useful extra for this class.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep. Recent guests describe dated rooms, tired mattresses and pillows, inconsistent Wi-Fi and street noise that can continue into the early morning. Some report renovated bathrooms; others still encounter old shower-over-bath setups, so room allocation matters. Parking costs extra, and breakfast inclusion depends on the booking. We'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting reliably modern rooms.

• Best for: Travelers attending Frei Caneca events; Nightlife-focused city breaks; Travelers prioritizing room space over modern decor

• Watch out for: Late-night street noise; Uneven room and bathroom condition; Inconsistent Wi-Fi

• Location: Convenient for Frei Caneca and Rua Augusta restaurants and nightlife; the lively street compromises quiet.

• Rooms: Generally spacious, but dated; recent reports mix renovated bathrooms with older fittings and worn bedding.

• Cleanliness: Broadly satisfactory aggregate ratings, though individual guests report dust and musty rooms.

• Service: Helpful, courteous staff are the most consistent strength across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi and meeting facilities; some guests flag tired pool-area upkeep.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is charged separately; check breakfast inclusion and confirm the exact room category.
