Axel's take: 7.8/10

Friendly staff and useful extras make this a good budget base, with basic rooms. A simple, independent budget hotel in Colonia Escalón, scored for what it is.

Windsor Plaza is a simple budget hotel in Colonia Escalón, and we'd consider it for a practical city stay rather than a polished hotel experience. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise the helpful staff, while cleanliness scores are generally solid. Included breakfast, free parking and a small outdoor pool add useful value, and nearby restaurants make the location convenient.

The rooms are the compromise: furnishings are basic, and recent Expedia reviews mention tired air-conditioning, maintenance needs and noise in street-facing rooms. Refrigerators and proper workspaces aren't standard across every room, so confirm those before booking. Booking.com's comparatively weak Wi-Fi score also makes this a less convincing choice for remote work. We'd pick it for travelers prioritizing friendly service and location; light sleepers and anyone expecting modern, consistently equipped rooms should look elsewhere.

• Best for: Budget-conscious city visitors; Short stays in Escalón; Travelers with a car

• Watch out for: Noise in street-facing rooms; Basic rooms and uneven maintenance; Weak Wi-Fi feedback; no elevator

• Location: Escalón base near restaurants and Plaza Futura; not in the historic center.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms; confirm refrigerators, desks and a quieter position.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive feedback, with stronger cleanliness ratings than facilities ratings.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are the clearest strength across booking sites.

• Amenities: Breakfast, outdoor pool, restaurant and free parking; don't expect the catalog's extensive resort facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers and pets cost extra; the supplied Mirador Plaza website belongs to a different hotel.
