Axel's take: 6.9/10

Useful for airport stopovers, but tired rooms weaken the four-star promise. an aging 4-star convention hotel near San José airport, scored for what it is.

Wyndham Herradura is a sprawling, aging 4-star convention hotel near the airport, better suited to a practical overnight than a polished resort stay. Its strongest assets are helpful staff, spacious rooms and three outdoor pools. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcome and breakfast, and the airport shuttle makes it useful at either end of a Costa Rica trip. We'd consider it for a short stay when convenience matters more than modern interiors.

The recurring drawback is room condition: recent guests describe worn carpets, musty smells and inconsistent air-conditioning or plumbing. Plenty also report clean, comfortable stays, so this is uneven rather than uniformly poor. Pool surfaces draw maintenance complaints too. Reserve the shuttle ahead and confirm its hours, especially for early flights. We'd skip it for a special occasion, a longer resort break or a stay focused on exploring downtown San José on foot.

• Best for: Airport stopovers; Convention attendees; Travelers prioritizing space over modern décor

• Watch out for: Uneven room condition and musty smells; Recurring plumbing and air-conditioning complaints; Airport shuttle has limited operating hours

• Location: Convenient for the airport and nearby business parks, not a downtown sightseeing base.

• Rooms: Generously sized, but dated finishes and maintenance problems recur across recent reviews.

• Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms; others flag stained carpets and musty conditions.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, though problem resolution varies.

• Amenities: Three outdoor pools, restaurants, casino and event facilities; pool maintenance receives mixed feedback.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists free parking and airport transfers; reserve the shuttle. A tax-related closure was reported in May 2025, followed by documented guest stays in 2026.
