Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong embassy-area pick, with standout service and less convenience for sightseeing. A small, independent 3-star in Pavas near the U.S. Embassy, scored for what it is.

Isla Verde is a small, independent 3-star in western San José that gets the important things right: cleanliness, helpful service and good value. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the staff, while recent reviews highlight comfortable rooms and the Chinese restaurant. Included breakfast, free parking and a fitness room make it a practical choice for embassy appointments or a short business stay.

The main compromise is location: this is Pavas, not a walk-out-the-door base for downtown museums and sightseeing. Entry-level rooms are compact—the hotel lists Standard rooms at about 15 square meters—and street-facing rooms can pick up traffic noise. We'd request an interior-facing room for sleep and consider a larger category for longer stays. Choose somewhere central if exploring San José on foot is the priority.

• Best for: U.S. Embassy appointments; Short business stays; Travelers prioritizing cleanliness and value

• Watch out for: Away from downtown sights; Compact Standard rooms; Traffic noise in street-facing rooms

• Location: In western San José's Pavas district, a short walk from the U.S. Embassy; downtown sightseeing requires transport.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned rooms range from compact Standards to larger Deluxe options; interior-facing rooms are preferable for light sleepers.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor, including recent guest reviews.

• Service: Repeated praise for friendly, attentive staff and practical help with embassy-related visits.

• Amenities: Included buffet breakfast, Chinese restaurant, free Wi-Fi, fitness room and business facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and self-parking are included; a March 2026 guest reported construction materials limiting parking, so confirm access if driving.
