Axel's take: 7.8/10

Friendly service and a generous pool offset dated rooms and reported renovation disruption. a practical mid-range hotel with a pool in highway-side La Uruca, scored for what it is.

Irazú is a practical mid-range hotel in La Uruca, better suited to business trips and short stopovers than exploring downtown on foot. It's a good pick for straightforward comfort with useful extras: Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and garden-framed outdoor pool. Free parking and complimentary access to the adjoining Gold's Gym strengthen the value.

The catch is inconsistent room condition: worn carpets, older furnishings and basic, repetitive breakfasts recur in reviews. Guests reported room and hallway renovation work into July 2026, including drilling and obstructed views; completion is unconfirmed, so ask about construction before booking. Airport journeys are traffic-dependent, and the shuttle costs extra. We'd skip it for a reliably quiet retreat, fresh interiors or a walkable sightseeing base.

• Best for: business travelers in La Uruca; short stopovers with a car; travelers who prioritize a pool and gym

• Watch out for: renovation disruption reported into July 2026; uneven room condition and worn carpets; traffic-dependent airport and downtown journeys

• Location: Highway-side La Uruca is practical by car, but not a downtown walking base.

• Rooms: King and double rooms include balcony options; guests report uneven upkeep and older furnishings.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised across major sites, although some guests flag tired or dirty carpets.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, casino, dining and free adjoining Gold's Gym access offer plenty for this class.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; airport transfers cost extra, breakfast inclusion varies, and renovation completion is unconfirmed.
