Axel's take: 8.1/10

Strong pools, dining and convenience, but the rooms aren't consistently five-star. a five-star business hotel with resort-style grounds in Escazú, scored for what it is.

This five-star InterContinental in Escazú is a strong pick for business trips or a comfortable stop before exploring Costa Rica. Its biggest strengths are outside the bedroom: garden-framed pools, a well-equipped gym, a spa and four restaurants, with Multiplaza close by. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the breakfast, helpful staff and pool area. We'd choose it for those facilities and the practical location rather than cutting-edge luxury.

The rooms are generally spacious and comfortable, but recent feedback is less consistent about their condition. Several guests mention dated furnishings or maintenance shortcomings; occasional housekeeping lapses also fall short of five-star expectations, although overall cleanliness ratings remain strong. Breakfast and club access depend on your booking, and parking information is inconsistent. We'd skip it for a walkable downtown sightseeing stay or if polished, reliably luxurious rooms are the priority.

• Best for: business travelers in Escazú; comfortable pre-tour stopovers; travelers who prioritize pools and dining

• Watch out for: uneven room condition and maintenance; not a downtown sightseeing base; confirm parking and breakfast inclusions

• Location: Convenient for Multiplaza and Escazú businesses, rather than exploring central San José on foot.

• Rooms: Generally spacious with comfortable beds, but several recent guests flag dated decor and maintenance issues.

• Cleanliness: Strong aggregate ratings, tempered by occasional recent reports of missed cleaning details.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise; check-in and problem handling are not uniformly smooth.

• Amenities: Outdoor pools, spa, gym and four restaurants are the main draw; breakfast is frequently praised.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm breakfast and club access; IHG's parking information contradicts itself about charges for registered guests.
