Axel's take: 7.2/10

Friendly staff and a garden pool, but expect dated rooms rather than four-star polish. An older, traditional mid-range hotel in Barrio Tournón, closer to three-star than four-star, scored for what it is.

Hotel Villa Tournon is an old-school mid-range hotel north of central San José, better approached as a three-star stay than a polished four-star. We'd consider it for a short city stop: Booking.com and Expedia guests generally rate service above the facilities, and the garden, outdoor pool and free parking give it practical appeal. Recent Expedia guests also praise cleanliness and the welcoming staff.

The main compromise is condition. Tripadvisor reviews describe worn corridor carpets, older furniture and bathrooms needing attention; some recent guests report shower or hot-water problems. The hot tub has also drawn maintenance complaints, so confirm it works before counting on it. Breakfast inclusion varies by booking. We'd skip it if modern bathrooms, consistently refreshed interiors or staying in the downtown core are priorities.

• Best for: Travelers comfortable with older hotels; Short San José stopovers; Drivers wanting free parking

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and bathrooms; Reported shower and hot-tub maintenance issues; Breakfast not included with every booking

• Location: In Barrio Tournón, north of the downtown core—not Desamparados as the catalog address suggests.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned rooms with older furnishings; bathroom condition is a recurring weakness.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive aggregate scores, though individual recent reviews report lapses.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are among the most consistent positives across sites.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, garden, restaurant, gym and free Wi-Fi; confirm hot-tub operation.

• Fees and surprises: Free parking is listed; breakfast inclusion depends on the booking selected.
