Axel's take: 6.6/10

A workable budget stopover, but upkeep and arrival arrangements are inconsistent. A small, no-frills budget hotel in Ciudad Cariari, outside central San José, scored for what it is.

Puerta del Sol is a small budget hotel in Ciudad Cariari, better suited to a short airport-area or convention-center stop than sightseeing in central San José. Breakfast, free Wi-Fi and nearby restaurants make it practical. Several 2026 guests praise the friendly owner and clean, comfortable rooms, but the overall feedback on Booking.com and Expedia is mixed rather than reliably good.

The trade-offs go beyond basic décor: guests repeatedly mention tight parking, confusing arrivals at a locked entrance, and uneven maintenance, including air-conditioning and hot-water problems. Pool reports conflict, with late-2025 guests finding it empty and some 2026 guests praising it, so confirm availability before booking. We'd consider it for a straightforward overnight with arrival arranged ahead; we'd skip it for dependable facilities, easy late-night check-in or a pool-focused family stay.

• Best for: Budget-conscious overnight travelers; Convention-center visitors with transport

• Watch out for: Locked entrance and confusing check-in; Limited, tight parking; Inconsistent maintenance and pool reports

• Location: Useful for airport-area and convention-center trips, not a walkable downtown sightseeing base.

• Rooms: Basic rooms draw comfort praise, alongside recurring reports of faulty air-conditioning and hot water.

• Cleanliness: Many guests find rooms clean, but bathroom cleanliness and musty smells receive repeated criticism.

• Service: Recent guests often praise the owner; other reviews describe difficult interactions and reception waits.

• Amenities: Breakfast and Wi-Fi are listed; confirm the outdoor pool is usable, and note there is no elevator.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is listed as free but spaces are limited; confirm arrival arrangements and any transfer charges.
