Axel's take: 7.4/10

Good budget basics and helpful staff, but thin walls limit the appeal. a no-frills budget hotel near downtown San José and bus terminals, scored for what it is.

Hotel Milan Costa Rica is a no-frills budget hotel that makes sense for a short San José stopover. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, included breakfast and generally clean rooms. With downtown sights and bus terminals accessible, it's a practical base for travelers who care more about value than space or polish.

The compromises are small rooms, cramped bathrooms and thin walls: noise complaints recur across several sites. Some guests also find the surrounding streets unwelcoming, especially after dark. A Trip.com guest staying in April 2026 reported early-morning construction at or beside the building; whether that work continues is unconfirmed. There's no elevator or on-site parking, and air-conditioning varies by room. We'd skip it for light sleepers, travelers needing step-free access without advance arrangements, or anyone wanting a relaxed neighborhood for evening strolls.

• Best for: budget-conscious solo travelers; short city stopovers; travelers connecting to regional buses

• Watch out for: thin walls and street noise; surrounding streets can feel uncomfortable after dark; no elevator or on-site parking

• Location: Convenient for the Central Market and bus connections, but neighborhood impressions are mixed.

• Rooms: Small and basic, with compact bathrooms; confirm air-conditioning in your booked category.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive recent feedback, though some guests report stained bedding.

• Service: Helpful, friendly reception staff are the most consistent strength; reception operates around the clock.

• Amenities: Included breakfast, restaurant, free Wi-Fi and terrace; no elevator.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; April 2026 construction noise was reported, but its current status is unconfirmed.
