A practical airport stop with welcoming staff, a pool and unavoidable aircraft noise. a simple independent 3-star airport hotel in Alajuela, scored for what it is.

Hotel Mango is a simple independent 3-star in Alajuela, minutes from SJO rather than central San José. It’s a strong pick for a first or last night: recent Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff, while the garden, outdoor pool and restaurant make a short stop more comfortable. Expect functional, air-conditioned rooms rather than polished interiors.

The main compromise is noise: planes pass low overhead, and road traffic is audible too. Some guests sleep well; light sleepers should look elsewhere. Breakfast is included but starts at 7 a.m., limiting its usefulness before early flights. Expedia lists a free hotel-to-airport shuttle, not guaranteed arrival pickup, so confirm arrangements directly. We’d choose it for airport convenience, not a quiet city break.

• Best for: First or last nights near SJO; Travelers returning rental cars; Short stays with pool time

• Watch out for: Low-flying aircraft and road noise; Breakfast starts at 7 a.m.; Confirm shuttle direction and timing

• Location: Close to SJO and rental-car offices; busy-road access can be awkward, and this is not central San José.

• Rooms: Simple air-conditioned rooms; recent guests generally find them comfortable, but some report dated furnishings or limited space.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Booking.com and Expedia reviews.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff earn frequent praise, despite occasional reception complaints.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, garden, restaurant/bar, free Wi-Fi, included breakfast and free self-parking.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists free airport drop-off on request; confirm arrival pickup separately. Dogs incur an additional fee.
