Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical airport stopover with helpful staff, but choose your room carefully. A no-frills budget inn in central Alajuela, convenient for SJO airport, scored for what it is.

La Guaria is a no-frills budget inn in central Alajuela—not downtown San José—and a good pick for a night around an SJO flight. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and convenient airport transport. Included breakfast and a small outdoor pool add useful extras for this class; we'd choose it for practicality rather than character or polish.

The trade-off is uneven room appeal. Recent Tripadvisor guests describe small or windowless rooms, while noise from streets, corridors and neighboring rooms appears across reviews. Breakfast is straightforward, and the building won't satisfy anyone expecting modern hotel finishes. Confirm your room's windows and the shuttle arrangements before booking: Booking.com describes one complimentary airport trip or parking, not unlimited transfers. We'd skip it for a quiet, leisurely stay.

• Best for: Budget-conscious airport stopovers; Short stays without a car; Travelers prioritizing helpful staff

• Watch out for: Street and corridor noise; Some small or windowless rooms; Confirm shuttle and parking inclusions

• Location: Central Alajuela, walkable to parks and restaurants, with convenient SJO access.

• Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; recent guests report considerable variation in size and natural light.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised on Booking.com and Expedia, although Tripadvisor feedback is less consistent.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff and efficient airport arrangements are recurring strengths.

• Amenities: Small outdoor pool, included breakfast and free Wi-Fi; breakfast is more functional than elaborate.

• Fees and surprises: Booking.com specifies one free airport trip or parking; confirm details. The official website could not be accessed.
