Axel's take: 8.1/10

Good-value historic character and helpful staff, but light sleepers should look elsewhere. A characterful, simple 3-star in downtown San José, scored for what it is.

Fleur de Lys is a simple 3-star in a Victorian mansion near San José’s museums, and it’s a strong pick for character and value rather than modern polish. Individually decorated rooms, wooden interiors and local artwork give it personality. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, generally clean rooms and included breakfast. We’d choose it for a short city stay with sightseeing on foot.

The main compromise is sleep: nearby trains and their early horns recur in reviews, alongside complaints about sound carrying through the building. Most room descriptions list fans rather than air-conditioning; Expedia separately advertises an air-conditioned master suite, so book carefully if cooling matters. There’s no elevator, either. We’d skip it for guaranteed quiet, step-free access or predictable modern-hotel comforts.

• Best for: Budget-conscious city explorers; Travelers who prefer historic character; Short stays near museums

• Watch out for: Early train horns and thin sound insulation; Fans rather than air-conditioning in many rooms; No elevator

• Location: Walkable to the National Museum, Jade Museum and National Theater; railway noise is the trade-off.

• Rooms: Individually decorated and generally comfortable, but layouts and cooling differ; confirm your room category.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings outweigh isolated negative reports.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Amenities: Included buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and garden seating; confirm restaurant opening hours before relying on dinner.

• Fees and surprises: Secure nearby parking and airport transfers cost extra; arrange parking and late-arrival instructions ahead.
