#2 of 4 hotels in Barrio Escalante & Los Yoses by Axel's take. Barrio Escalante & Los Yoses is #3 of 8 places to stay in San Jose, Costa Rica. The best hotels in Barrio Escalante & Los Yoses, ranked · Where to stay in San Jose, Costa Rica

Axel's take: 7.5/10

Good neighborhood value and helpful staff, but train noise and uneven rooms limit the appeal. a small, no-frills budget hotel in a converted Barrio Escalante house, scored for what it is.

Hotel 1492 is a small budget hotel in a converted house, and we'd choose it for Barrio Escalante's restaurants rather than polished rooms. Its colorful common areas and courtyard give it character. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the location and helpful staff; overall feedback supports it as a good-value base for exploring San José.

The catch is consistency. Rooms vary considerably in size and condition, and recent guests across sites report loud early-morning train horns. Cleanliness earns mostly positive ratings, but repeated reports of insects and maintenance lapses deserve attention. Breakfast can cost extra, and parking is limited despite listings advertising it. It's a sensible short-stay option for budget-minded travelers; we'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting reliably modern comfort.

  • Best for: budget-minded city explorers; travelers exploring Escalante's restaurants; short stays without a car

  • Watch out for: early-morning train horns; uneven room condition and occasional pest reports; limited parking; breakfast may cost extra

  • Location: Walkable access to Escalante restaurants and central sights; nearby trains compromise quiet.

  • Rooms: Basic, individually varying rooms; fans are listed rather than air-conditioning, with recurring maintenance complaints.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive ratings, tempered by several recent insect and housekeeping complaints.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful reception is a recurring strength, though English proficiency varies.

  • Amenities: Courtyard, garden, Wi-Fi and breakfast are supported; do not expect a full-service spa hotel.

  • Fees and surprises: Confirm breakfast inclusion, parking arrangements and your exact room; the official website could not be accessed.
