Axel's take: 8.6/10

Warm service and strong leisure facilities make this a dependable, car-friendly San José base. A full-service mid-range chain hotel in highway-side Uruca, scored for what it is.

Holiday Inn San José La Sabana is a full-service mid-range hotel in Uruca, better suited to a practical city stop than a luxury escape. We'd pick it for comfortable beds, consistently praised cleanliness and genuinely helpful staff: recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Booking.com feedback broadly agrees on those strengths. The outdoor pool, complimentary access to adjoining Gold’s Gym and well-liked breakfast give it more appeal than a straightforward business hotel.

The catch is the setting beside a major highway, outside the historic center—not a doorstep sightseeing base despite the La Sabana name. Some guests flag road noise; request a pool-facing room if you're sensitive. Airport transfers cost extra, and breakfast inclusion depends on your booking. It's a strong choice for drivers, business travelers and short stopovers; we'd skip it for a walk-everywhere city break.

• Best for: Business travelers who want a proper gym; Drivers making a short San José stop; Families wanting pool time

• Watch out for: Road noise in some street-facing rooms; Historic-center sightseeing requires transport; Airport transfers and some breakfasts cost extra

• Location: Highway-side Uruca location favors driving over exploring the historic center on foot.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn repeated praise; pool-facing rooms are the better request for quieter surroundings.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception and restaurant staff are among the most frequently praised features.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, free adjoining Gold’s Gym access with indoor lap pool, restaurants and an on-site casino.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking is free; airport transfers are charged, and breakfast coverage depends on the booked plan.
