Axel's take: 7.2/10

Central location and welcoming staff make up for some, but not all, dated-room drawbacks. An older full-service downtown business hotel, not a true five-star luxury stay, scored for what it is.

Delta Aurola is an older full-service downtown hotel, now under Marriott rather than Holiday Inn. It’s a reasonable pick for exploring central San José, but we wouldn’t book it expecting five-star polish. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, while spacious rooms, comfortable beds and city views give it solid everyday appeal. The indoor pool, gym, restaurant and bar round out a practical city base.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep. Recent reviews across several sites still describe tired bathrooms, worn furnishings and occasional musty smells, alongside plenty of clean, comfortable stays. Guests have reported renovation work, but newer reviews suggest the refresh remains uneven; don’t assume every room has been modernized. Ask about your room’s condition and any work before booking. We’d skip it for a luxury occasion or if dated bathrooms and maintenance inconsistencies would spoil the stay.

  • Best for: Short downtown sightseeing stays; Business travelers prioritizing location; Travelers comfortable with an older hotel

  • Watch out for: Uneven room updates and dated bathrooms; Recurring reports of musty smells; Confirm renovation status before arrival

  • Location: Central El Carmen setting near Morazán Park, museums and downtown attractions.

  • Rooms: Often spacious with comfortable beds and city views; bathrooms and furnishings remain unevenly updated.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive overall, but recurring reports of mustiness and bathroom-cleaning shortcomings deserve attention.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, though problem handling is less reliable.

  • Amenities: Marriott confirms an indoor pool, gym, restaurant, bar and casino; guests sometimes describe cold pool water.

  • Fees and surprises: Marriott lists complimentary on-site parking but paid valet; confirm breakfast inclusion and airport-transfer charges.
