Axel's take

a no-frills roadside hotel near Research Triangle Park

6.0/10

Useful basics near RTP, but inconsistent upkeep makes this a cautious budget pick.

Clarion Pointe is a no-frills roadside hotel near I-40 and Research Triangle Park, formerly a Comfort Inn. We'd consider it for a short, budget-minded stop rather than a longer stay. Free parking, breakfast and Wi-Fi cover the essentials, and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds and friendly desk staff. Choice advertises a fully renovated property, but guest feedback does not consistently match that promise.

The main drawbacks are uneven cleanliness, worn common areas and recurring odor complaints. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests both mention unpleasant smells; a 2026 Expedia review specifically reports smoke despite the hotel's smoke-free policy. Others describe clean rooms and a decent night's sleep, so the experience is not uniformly poor. We'd skip it if you're sensitive to smoke or want reliably polished surroundings.

Best for

  • budget travelers with a car
  • short RTP-area stays

Watch out for

  • recurring smoke and odor complaints
  • inconsistent cleaning and upkeep
  • mixed reports about parking-lot condition
Location
Convenient for I-40 and RTP by car; not a downtown Durham base.
Rooms
Fridges and microwaves are useful; beds earn praise, but condition reports vary.
Cleanliness
Some guests report spotless rooms, while others flag poor cleaning and odors.
Service
Front-desk friendliness is a recurring positive; housekeeping feedback is less consistent.
Amenities
Free breakfast, parking and Wi-Fi, plus a fitness room and business center.
Fees and surprises
The hotel lists a refundable deposit and nightly pet charges; confirm terms before booking.
