Axel's take: 7.7/10
Go for the art and downtown location, not flawless four-star polish. a historic 4-star art-museum hotel in downtown Durham, scored for what it is.
21c is a historic 4-star hotel in a former Art Deco bank, with contemporary galleries that give it more personality than a standard downtown stay. It's a strong pick for art lovers and theater weekends: DPAC, restaurants and the American Tobacco Campus are walkable. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the artwork, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff; Counting House adds a convenient restaurant and bar.
The catch is inconsistent execution. Recent Accor reviews repeatedly describe delayed check-ins, missed housekeeping and uneven valet service, alongside plenty of warm welcomes. Room wear and maintenance niggles also recur, while some Expedia guests report intrusive nighttime noise. Valet parking and breakfast cost extra. We'd choose it for character and convenience, but skip it if quiet nights and reliably polished service matter more than the museum setting.
