Axel's take: 7.6/10

A good family base with a lively pool, but not a quiet four-star escape. a family-friendly 4-star convention hotel in Sainte-Foy, scored for what it is.

Hôtel Plaza Québec is a family-friendly 4-star convention hotel in Sainte-Foy, better suited to pool time and shopping than exploring Old Québec on foot. We'd consider it for a car-based stay: free parking, a tropical indoor pool and Ginger Resto-Bar give you reasons to stay on-site. Expedia and Booking.com guests generally praise comfortable beds, cleanliness and welcoming staff.

The trade-off is consistency rather than a lack of facilities. Recent Tripadvisor and Trip.com reviews describe dated rooms and maintenance niggles, while pool-facing rooms can pick up music and children's noise. Nearby avenue des Hôtels and Route 175 reconstruction also complicates driving access. We'd choose an exterior-facing room for quieter nights and skip it if you want polished luxury or Old Québec outside your door.

• Best for: families who prioritize an indoor pool; travelers with a car; Sainte-Foy shopping and business stays

• Watch out for: noise in pool-facing rooms; dated finishes and uneven maintenance; nearby roadwork and detours

• Location: Near Sainte-Foy malls and major roads; Old Québec requires a separate trip.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, but condition varies; exterior-facing rooms are the quieter bet.

• Cleanliness: Positive overall on Booking.com and Expedia, despite some recent housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Staff friendliness is a recurring strength; restaurant service gets more mixed feedback.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, hot tub, gym and Ginger Resto-Bar; check pool hours for midday closures.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free subject to availability; a deposit applies, and agency bookings have a 5 p.m. check-in.
