Axel's take: 8.5/10

Choose it for spacious suites and quiet pools, not doorstep beach access. an upscale all-suite, all-inclusive resort set back from Bávaro Beach, scored for what it is.

Zel is an upscale all-suite, all-inclusive resort with a Mediterranean look and a calmer atmosphere than Punta Cana’s party resorts. It’s a strong pick for travelers who value room space, attractive pools and fitness activities. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the large, comfortable suites and cleanliness, while friendly staff earn plenty of mentions. Swim-up suites are a particular draw.

The biggest catch is location: the beach is roughly a ten-minute walk away, with a complimentary shuttle as an alternative. Food gets plenty of praise, but recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews also flag limited buffet variety and uneven restaurant service—meaning this isn’t consistently polished luxury. We’d choose it for relaxed pool days and an active break, but skip it if direct beachfront access, lively nightlife or reliably excellent dining tops your list.

• Best for: couples seeking a quieter resort; fitness-minded travelers; families wanting spacious suites

• Watch out for: beach requires a walk or shuttle; limited buffet variety and uneven dining service; no elevators; request ground-floor accommodation if needed

• Location: Set back from Bávaro Beach; guests describe about a ten-minute walk or a complimentary shuttle ride.

• Rooms: Generously sized suites with separate living areas and terrace whirlpools; swim-up categories add direct pool access.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor, despite occasional housekeeping follow-through complaints.

• Service: Warm staff and helpful concierges receive frequent praise; restaurant pacing and request handling are less consistent.

• Amenities: Pools, beach club, gym, fitness classes, spa and access to the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center support an active, relaxed stay.

• Fees and surprises: Spa treatments and pet stays cost extra; confirm inclusions and any tennis reservation conditions before booking.
