Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Universal base with spacious rooms, useful park perks and some resort-scale inconveniences. An upscale, Italian-themed resort at Universal Orlando, scored for what it is.

Portofino Bay is an upscale, Italian-themed resort that makes particular sense for Universal families. We'd choose it for the spacious rooms, waterfront setting and included Express Unlimited access at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. Three outdoor pools and the water taxi make returning from the parks part of the appeal.

The trade-off is scale: walks around the property can be lengthy, and some guests mention corridor noise. Parking costs extra, and the included Express benefit does not cover Epic Universe, so this is less compelling for an Epic-focused trip. Mandara Spa has permanently closed. We'd skip it for a spa getaway or if you won't use the park benefits enough to justify the premium.

• Best for: Families visiting Universal's original two parks; Travelers who will use Express Unlimited; Parkgoers wanting pool time between visits

• Watch out for: Long walks around the sprawling property; Express benefit excludes Epic Universe; Mandara Spa permanently closed

• Location: Water taxi and walking access suit the original Universal parks; Epic Universe requires separate transportation.

• Rooms: Spacious rooms and comfortable beds earn praise; some guests report corridor noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, supported by strong Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Recent guests across several sites repeatedly praise friendly, helpful staff.

• Amenities: Three outdoor pools, a waterslide, fitness center and multiple dining options; Mandara Spa has closed.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and pet stays carry extra charges; park admission is separate from the included Express benefit.
