Axel's take: 7.5/10

A practical budget base with a pool, but not a quiet retreat. a no-frills 2-star hotel near Oaxaca’s central markets, scored for what it is.

Marqués Oaxaca is a no-frills 2-star hotel south of Oaxaca’s central markets, and a good pick if sightseeing matters more than room polish. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, generally clean rooms and walkable location. The outdoor pool is a useful extra for this class. We’d choose it for a straightforward, budget-minded city stay rather than a hotel-centered vacation.

The rooms are plain, and soundproofing is a weakness: recent Expedia feedback and older Tripadvisor reviews both flag noise. Standard room listings specify fans, so don’t assume air-conditioning despite conflicting information elsewhere. Parking is limited and charged separately, pets bring extra charges, and there’s no elevator. Light sleepers and travelers wanting polished interiors or guaranteed cooling should look elsewhere.

  • Best for: budget-minded sightseers; travelers exploring the central markets; families wanting a simple hotel with a pool

  • Watch out for: noise and limited soundproofing; fan-cooled rooms; confirm air-conditioning; limited paid parking and no elevator

  • Location: Walkable to the central markets and roughly 12 minutes from the cathedral.

  • Rooms: Plain, functional rooms with private bathrooms; standard listings specify fans.

  • Cleanliness: Generally praised on Booking.com and in recent Expedia reviews, though not uniformly.

  • Service: Helpful staff are a recurring strength; reception operates around the clock.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and luggage storage.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra and spaces are limited; Expedia lists pet fees and a pet deposit.
