Axel's take: 8.1/10

A practical Oaxaca base with strong basics, rather than boutique character. a no-frills chain hotel near Oaxaca’s historic center, scored for what it is.

City Express is a no-frills chain hotel near the northern edge of Oaxaca’s historic center. It’s a strong pick if you want straightforward accommodation with breakfast and on-site parking included. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness and helpful staff, while Google reviews also highlight comfortable, compact rooms. Santo Domingo is roughly a 15-minute walk away; this is a sightseeing base, not a hotel to build your trip around.

The compromises are modest room sizes, some dated fittings and a breakfast that satisfies many guests but draws repeated complaints about limited variety. Service feedback is mostly positive, though not uniformly warm. Pool information is particularly confusing: guests report photos belonging to another hotel, while Marriott’s promotional text mentions a pool. Confirm directly if swimming matters. We’d skip it for a romantic, characterful stay or a location right beside the Zócalo.

• Best for: practical sightseeing trips; travelers arriving by car; short business stays

• Watch out for: compact rooms and some dated fittings; mixed feedback on breakfast variety; conflicting pool information

• Location: Walkable to Santo Domingo; allow a longer walk to the Zócalo.

• Rooms: Simple, air-conditioned rooms; standard options are approximately 215 square feet.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Expedia feedback, with occasional contrary reports.

• Service: Generally helpful, although some guests describe indifferent reception staff.

• Amenities: Included breakfast, Wi-Fi and a small gym; verify pool availability directly.

• Fees and surprises: Marriott confirms complimentary on-site parking; its local shuttle is not an airport transfer.
