#5 of 9 hotels in Centro Histórico & the Zócalo by Axel's take. Centro Histórico & the Zócalo is #1 of 7 places to stay in Oaxaca City. The best hotels in Centro Histórico & the Zócalo, ranked · Where to stay in Oaxaca City

Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical central base with friendly staff, but noise can spoil the value. a simple, independent 3-star near Oaxaca’s markets, scored for what it is.

Hotel Real Alma is a simple, independent 3-star within walking distance of Oaxaca’s main markets and Zócalo. It’s a good-value base for travelers spending most of their time exploring rather than lounging at the hotel. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness and helpful staff, while breakfast on the rooftop terrace is a frequent highlight. The overall feedback is positive, though room comfort is less consistent.

The main compromise is noise: guests on several sites describe slamming doors, voices and early breakfast preparations carrying into bedrooms. Some rooms are small or poorly ventilated, and recent Booking.com reviews mention unreliable shower temperature or pressure. The surrounding commercial streets are convenient rather than picturesque. Recent guests also report no elevator, despite contradictory amenity listings. We’d skip it for light sleepers or anyone needing dependable step-free access.

  • Best for: value-minded city explorers; travelers visiting the markets; short sightseeing stays

  • Watch out for: early-morning noise and sound carrying between rooms; small rooms and inconsistent showers; elevator and accessibility information conflicts

  • Location: Walkable to the markets and Zócalo; the busy commercial surroundings divide opinion.

  • Rooms: Simple, air-conditioned rooms; size, ventilation and shower performance vary.

  • Cleanliness: Generally a strength across Booking.com and Expedia, despite some bathroom-condition complaints.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful reception and breakfast staff earn repeated praise.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and rooftop breakfast; confirm elevator availability directly before booking.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is off-site; confirm breakfast inclusion and parking access, while cribs and extra beds cost extra.
