Axel's take: 6.8/10

Go for the location and rooftop, not for a quiet night. an art-filled 3-star boutique hotel with a lively rooftop in Oaxaca’s historic center, scored for what it is.

Los Amantes is an art-filled 3-star boutique hotel near Santo Domingo, with individually styled rooms across several houses and a rooftop restaurant woven into the experience. It’s a good fit for travelers who want restaurants, galleries and mezcal bars on their doorstep. Expedia guests generally praise cleanliness, breakfast and staff, while the hotel’s own room descriptions show genuinely varied layouts rather than interchangeable rooms.

The catch is sleep. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly describe rooftop music, scraping furniture and early restaurant preparations carrying into bedrooms. Some rooms are also small or short on daylight, so confirm the exact house and room before booking. A May 2026 Expedia guest reported the pool unavailable; check its status rather than counting on it. We’d skip this for light sleepers, families seeking quiet or a restful romantic break.

• Best for: nightlife-minded couples; travelers exploring the center on foot; boutique-design enthusiasts

• Watch out for: rooftop and restaurant noise late and early; room size and daylight vary considerably; pool availability needs confirmation

• Location: Excellent historic-center position near Santo Domingo, restaurants, galleries and bars.

• Rooms: Distinctive layouts across several houses; some guests report cramped, dark rooms and limited bathroom privacy.

• Cleanliness: Strong Expedia cleanliness feedback overall, though other sites contain occasional housekeeping and drain-odor complaints.

• Service: Many guests praise helpful staff, but Tripadvisor feedback on problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Rooftop dining, mezcal bars and breakfast are strengths; confirm any pool or soaking-tub access.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm the exact room, building, cancellation terms and any pet or transport charges before booking.
