The Shelby is a renovated 3-star oceanfront hotel, not a newly built luxury resort. We'd pick it for easy beach days and a walkable base near the Boardwalk and SkyWheel. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, comfortable beds and ocean views; cleanliness is generally a strength. The retro styling gives this older property personality, while the outdoor pool, lazy river, tiki bar and Palm & Pebble restaurant make staying on-site convenient.
The catches are worth knowing: a daily amenity fee applies even though parking is advertised as complimentary, and breakfast isn't automatically included. Guests mention busy elevators, crowded pool seating and occasional housekeeping or billing hiccups. Poolside music also makes this less suited to travelers seeking uninterrupted quiet.
