Axel's take: 9.2/10

A strong luxury choice for personal service and historic character, rather than contemporary style. a historic five-star luxury hotel in downtown Montréal, scored for what it is.

This historic five-star in downtown Montréal earns its reputation through service, not just its name. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise warm, proactive staff, immaculate rooms and thoughtful anniversary touches. We'd choose it for a celebratory stay: marble bathrooms with heated floors, Maison Boulud, Palm Court afternoon tea and an indoor rooftop saltwater pool give you reasons to linger. Museums, shopping and Peel metro are close by.

The trade-offs are worth knowing at this level. Several Tripadvisor guests describe uneven breakfast or afternoon-tea service, despite the overwhelmingly positive hospitality reports. Check your room category rather than assuming every room feels expansive; some entry-level rooms disappoint on seating and space. Breakfast and parking cost extra. We'd skip it if you want sleek contemporary design or an Old Montréal doorstep.

• Best for: anniversary and celebration stays; travelers who prioritize personal service; luxury-minded museum and shopping trips

• Watch out for: occasional uneven dining service; entry-level room space and seating; breakfast and parking charges

• Location: Walkable downtown setting near the Museum of Fine Arts, shopping and Peel metro; not in Old Montréal.

• Rooms: Comfortable, traditionally styled rooms with heated marble bathroom floors; check category and layout for extra space.

• Cleanliness: An especially strong signal: recent guests consistently describe immaculate rooms and attentive housekeeping.

• Service: Warm, proactive front-desk and concierge service stands out; dining service is occasionally less consistent.

• Amenities: Maison Boulud, Palm Court tea, Spa St. James, a heated indoor rooftop saltwater pool and a 24-hour gym.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, parking and pet stays carry charges; the official site says no hotel airport shuttle.
