Axel's take: 8.6/10

A dependable downtown base that gets comfort, cleanliness and location right. a modern 4-star downtown chain hotel near the Bell Centre, scored for what it is.

Novotel Montreal Centre is a modern 4-star chain hotel, and a strong pick for downtown convenience without luxury expectations. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. Its position near the Bell Centre, Sainte-Catherine shopping and metro connections makes it especially practical for concerts, hockey and car-free city breaks. We'd choose it for reliable comfort rather than distinctive Montreal character.

The main trade-offs are extras and setting: parking costs extra, and breakfast is only included with some bookings. Guests generally enjoy the buffet, but some question its standalone value. This is a downtown shopping-and-business base, not an Old Montreal address; skip it if historic surroundings are central to your trip.

• Best for: Bell Centre concerts and hockey; car-free downtown breaks; business travelers

• Watch out for: Paid parking; Breakfast not always included; Not in Old Montreal

• Location: Excellent for the Bell Centre, Sainte-Catherine shopping and nearby metro connections.

• Rooms: Guests commonly describe spacious, comfortable rooms with good beds; practical rather than luxurious.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise welcoming, helpful staff and efficient check-in.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, L'Ô restaurant and bar, and a terrace.

• Fees and surprises: Parking, breakfast unless included, and pets carry additional charges.
