Axel's take: 8.4/10

Strong leisure facilities and clean rooms make this a good downtown base, with some quirks. A playful, design-led mid-range Marriott hotel near Central Station, scored for what it is.

Moxy Montreal Downtown is a playful mid-range Marriott hotel, not a traditional full-service luxury stay. We'd pick it for a city break: Central Station, the metro and Bell Centre are close, while the indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and panoramic gym give it more substance than the styling alone suggests. Expedia and Booking.com guests strongly praise cleanliness and comfort; Tripadvisor's smaller, more mixed sample still backs the clean-room credentials.

The trade-offs are practical. Rooms favor hooks and pared-back storage over conventional wardrobes, breakfast is not included, and underground parking costs extra. Nearby road construction has repeatedly complicated access and sometimes brought noise, so check the approach before arriving. Staff receive plenty of praise, though service complaints do recur. It's a strong pick for leisure travelers who enjoy sociable spaces; we'd skip it for a more traditional, fuss-free business stay.

• Best for: Couples on a city break; Bell Centre eventgoers; Travelers who prioritize a pool and gym

• Watch out for: Nearby road construction and changing access; Limited conventional clothing storage; Breakfast and parking cost extra

• Location: Convenient for Central Station, Bonaventure metro and Bell Centre; nearby construction can complicate arrival.

• Rooms: Modern industrial styling, comfortable beds and walk-in showers; storage is less conventional than in a traditional hotel.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across booking-site ratings and Tripadvisor guest accounts.

• Service: Friendly staff earn frequent praise, but check-in and problem handling are not uniformly smooth.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, panoramic gym, games space and a bar-restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, underground parking and pets carry extra charges; check current road access before arrival.
