Axel's take: 8.7/10

Choose it for Old Montreal character, spacious rooms and genuinely helpful staff. An art-filled, historic 4-star boutique hotel in Old Montreal, scored for what it is.

LHotel Montreal is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose original contemporary art gives it more personality than a conventional city hotel. It’s a strong pick for exploring Old Montreal on foot, with Notre-Dame Basilica, restaurants and the Old Port nearby. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds and generously sized rooms; cleanliness also earns strong marks across booking sites.

The trade-off is character rather than uniformly modern polish: some furnishings look dated, and this isn’t a full-service luxury hotel. The included breakfast is pastries, hot drinks and juice—not a substantial buffet—and there’s no restaurant or traditional meal room service. Entrance steps also limit accessibility despite the elevator. We’d choose it for a culture-focused city break, but skip it if step-free access, contemporary interiors or extensive facilities are priorities.

• Best for: Couples exploring Old Montreal; Art lovers seeking an independent hotel; Travelers who appreciate spacious rooms

• Watch out for: Some dated furnishings; Light pastry-based breakfast; Entrance steps and partial accessibility

• Location: Walkable Old Montreal base near Notre-Dame Basilica, the Old Port and the convention centre.

• Rooms: Guests frequently praise space and comfortable beds; some furnishings show their age.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, supported by high cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent highlight across recent guest reviews.

• Amenities: Original art, bar, small 24-hour gym and complimentary light breakfast; no restaurant or traditional meal room service.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra and has vehicle-height restrictions; confirm accessibility needs before booking.
