Axel's take: 9.0/10

A standout downtown base for space, cleanliness and practical family stays. A mid-range downtown aparthotel with full kitchens and unusually spacious suites, scored for what it is.

Le Square Phillips is a mid-range downtown aparthotel that gets the important things right: generous space, proper kitchens and dependable housekeeping. We'd make it a strong pick for families or longer stays rather than travelers seeking boutique style. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, comfortable rooms and helpful staff; Booking.com guests reinforce the appeal of the apartment-like layouts. The hotel confirms an included continental breakfast, heated indoor rooftop pool, gym and terrace.

The trade-offs are mostly practical: some guests find the decor dated, and breakfast can feel basic and crowded. Valet parking costs extra. More importantly, Expedia currently warns of neighboring-building construction and possible noise; light sleepers should check the situation before booking. We'd skip it for sleek design or guaranteed daytime quiet, but it's an excellent fit when room to spread out matters more.

• Best for: Families needing space and a kitchen; Longer downtown stays; Sightseers exploring on foot or by metro

• Watch out for: Neighboring construction may cause noise; Basic breakfast and a busy breakfast room; Paid valet parking

• Location: Central downtown position near Sainte-Catherine Street, with McGill and Square-Victoria metro stations nearby.

• Rooms: Large studios and suites with equipped kitchens; comfortable rather than consistently contemporary in style.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength, supported by strong category ratings and repeated recent guest praise.

• Service: Helpful reception and valet staff earn consistent praise across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Included continental breakfast, heated indoor rooftop pool, terrace, gym and paid self-service laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and pets incur charges; Expedia flags neighboring construction with potential noise disturbance.
