Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong downtown pick for space and useful extras, rather than modern style. a practical 3-star apartment hotel in downtown Montreal, scored for what it is.

L’Appartement is a practical 3-star apartment hotel near McGill, and a strong pick if you value space over style. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise roomy accommodation, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Equipped kitchens, included continental breakfast and guest laundry make longer stays easier; the indoor rooftop pool and terrace add appeal beyond the basics. We'd put it high on the list for families and travelers who want to prepare some meals themselves.

The trade-off is an older property: recent guests still describe dated furnishings and occasional wear, even while praising cleanliness. Breakfast is useful rather than elaborate, and the dining room gets crowded. Parking costs extra and spaces are limited. We'd skip it if contemporary design is essential; travelers needing step-free access should check arrangements before booking, as Expedia lists entrance steps.

• Best for: families wanting extra space; longer stays with self-catering; McGill and downtown visitors

• Watch out for: dated decor and occasional wear; crowded breakfast room; entrance steps and limited paid parking

• Location: Central Sherbrooke Street setting near McGill, with McGill metro roughly five minutes away.

• Rooms: Generously sized studios and suites with equipped kitchens; comfort generally outshines decor.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, despite the property's age.

• Service: Guests repeatedly praise friendly, helpful reception staff and responsive assistance.

• Amenities: Included continental breakfast, indoor rooftop pool, terrace, gym and paid self-service laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and pets carry extra charges; parking is limited, and Expedia lists five entrance steps.
