Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical downtown base, stronger on location than polish. an independent 3-star downtown hotel with kitchenette-equipped rooms, scored for what it is.

Hotel Zero 1 is an independent 3-star with kitchenette-equipped rooms, best approached as a practical city base rather than a boutique splurge. We'd pick it for exploring Montréal without a car: Chinatown is opposite, with Old Montréal, festival venues and metro stations within walking distance. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the convenient location, helpful staff and generally clean rooms. Microwaves and fridges add useful everyday value.

The trade-off is uneven polish. Guests describe some compact or awkwardly arranged rooms, while recent Tripadvisor and Trip.com reviews flag maintenance shortcomings and occasional noise. Housekeeping is on request, not an automatic daily service. Breakfast gets mixed reactions, and parking costs extra; Expedia also lists a destination fee and damage deposit. We'd skip it if spacious rooms, reliably quiet nights or full-service attention matter more than walkability.

• Best for: car-free city breaks; festival and convention visitors; travelers who want a fridge and microwave

• Watch out for: compact rooms and uneven upkeep; occasional noise complaints; housekeeping must be requested

• Location: Excellent sightseeing base opposite Chinatown, near metro stations and the Quartier des Spectacles.

• Rooms: Useful kitchenettes; room sizes vary, with some complaints about layouts, wear and noise.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive recent feedback, though occasional cleaning lapses are reported.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise; problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, fitness center, breakfast service and a seasonal outdoor terrace.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a destination fee and damage deposit; parking and breakfast generally cost extra.
