Axel's take: 8.1/10

A well-placed, good-value base if you can look past the dated rooms. a simple, independent 3-star in Montreal’s Latin Quarter, scored for what it is.

Hotel St-Denis is a simple, independent 3-star in the Latin Quarter, and we'd pick it for exploring Montreal rather than spending time at the hotel. Berri-UQAM metro is a short walk away, with restaurants and entertainment nearby. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; Tripadvisor feedback also backs the location and value. It's a strong choice if practical comfort matters more than contemporary design.

The trade-off is an unmistakably older property. Tripadvisor guests repeatedly describe dated furnishings, and some recent guests on Tripadvisor and Expedia mention cramped bathrooms or showers. Service draws occasional criticism, though the broader feedback is positive. Paid indoor parking is accessed from rue Christin, so get directions before driving in. We'd skip it if fresh interiors, generous bathrooms or extensive facilities are priorities.

• Best for: value-minded city explorers; travelers using the metro; short sightseeing stays

• Watch out for: dated furnishings and interiors; some cramped bathrooms or showers; paid garage accessed from rue Christin

• Location: Latin Quarter base near Berri-UQAM, restaurants and entertainment, with easy access to Old Montreal.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise; furnishings look dated, and bathroom layouts vary.

• Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is strongly positive about room cleanliness.

• Service: Generally helpful and welcoming staff, with occasional less-positive Tripadvisor reports.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, in-room coffee makers and a 24-hour front desk cover the essentials.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; the hotel lists a 6-foot-4 garage clearance, and Expedia lists a deposit.
