Axel's take: 9.1/10

Personal service and well-equipped rooms make this Plateau boutique a standout. a tiny 4-star boutique hotel with apartment-style rooms in the Plateau, scored for what it is.

Kutuma is a nine-room, African-inspired 4-star boutique hotel with apartment-style comforts rather than big-hotel facilities. It's a strong pick for exploring the Plateau: cafés, restaurants and Sherbrooke metro are close, and rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spotless rooms, comfortable beds and unusually attentive staff. The Ethiopian restaurant, Le Nil Bleu, adds a compelling reason to dine downstairs. We'd choose it for neighborhood character and personal service over a conventional downtown chain.

The biggest catch is access: there's no elevator, so expect stairs, especially to upper-floor suites. Breakfast and valet parking cost extra, and this isn't an Old Montreal doorstep location. We'd skip it if step-free access or extensive hotel facilities matter more than a small, welcoming base.

• Best for: couples exploring the Plateau; travelers who want kitchen facilities; fans of small, personal hotels

• Watch out for: stairs only; no elevator; breakfast and valet parking cost extra; not in Old Montreal

• Location: Walkable Saint-Denis setting near cafés, restaurants and Sherbrooke metro.

• Rooms: Distinctive African-inspired décor; kitchenettes or kitchens, with whirlpool tubs in selected suites.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback, including recent praise for spotless rooms.

• Service: Warm, proactive staff are a recurring highlight across review sites.

• Amenities: Ethiopian restaurant, bar, free Wi-Fi and in-room cooking facilities; small-hotel scope.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and valet parking are extra; no elevator, so confirm your room's floor.
