#6 of 8 hotels in Plateau Mont-Royal by Axel's take. Plateau Mont-Royal is #4 of 6 places to stay in Montreal. The best hotels in Plateau Mont-Royal, ranked · Where to stay in Montreal

Axel's take: 8.3/10

A friendly, well-located hostel whose communal spaces outshine its basic rooms. a budget hostel with dorms and private rooms in central Montreal, scored for what it is.

Auberge du Plateau is a budget hostel, not a conventional hotel, and it's a strong pick for exploring Montreal without spending heavily on accommodation. Dorms and private rooms suit different budgets, while the shared kitchen, rooftop terrace and included pancake breakfast give it a sociable feel. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, cleanliness and convenient location between the Plateau and Quartier des Spectacles.

The trade-offs are in the old building: steep stairs without an elevator, basic rooms and sound that carries between spaces. Recent Booking.com reviews also flag cramped showers and some tired bathroom fittings, although cleanliness feedback remains broadly positive. Check whether your room has a private bathroom or sits in the semi-basement. We'd skip it if you need step-free access, reliably quiet nights or hotel-style privacy.

  • Best for: solo travelers seeking a sociable base; budget-minded couples comfortable with hostel basics; car-free city explorers

  • Watch out for: steep stairs and no elevator; variable noise and compact shared bathrooms; some private rooms are in the semi-basement

  • Location: Walkable base near Saint-Denis, Saint-Laurent and the entertainment district; Sherbrooke metro is roughly six minutes away.

  • Rooms: Mixed and women-only dorms plus private rooms; bathroom arrangements and daylight vary by category.

  • Cleanliness: Generally well reviewed across sites, with occasional criticism of shared-bathroom upkeep.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength; reception is not staffed around the clock.

  • Amenities: Included breakfast, shared kitchen, rooftop terrace, free Wi-Fi and laundry; kitchen access has limited hours.

  • Fees and surprises: Laundry costs extra; parking is off-site, and the terrace may close for private events.
