#6 of 9 hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea by Axel's take. Carmel-by-the-Sea is #4 of 6 places to stay in Monterey, California. The best hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea, ranked · Where to stay in Monterey, California

Axel's take: 8.1/10

A friendly Carmel base with spacious rooms, useful extras and dated interiors. A simple, family-run Bavarian-style inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, scored for what it is.

Hofsas House is a simple, family-run Bavarian-style inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, not Monterey proper. It's a strong pick for travelers who favor space, friendly service and a walkable location over modern finishes. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise the staff, comfortable rooms and cleanliness. Free parking, a heated outdoor pool and continental breakfast make it a practical base; shops and restaurants are close, while Carmel Beach is about eight blocks away.

The trade-off is age: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews describe worn furnishings and bathrooms, and breakfast is light rather than a full meal. There’s no elevator, so arrange an appropriate room if stairs are difficult. We'd skip it for sleek interiors or reliably quiet rooms. The approved Carmel Legacy Hotel replacement project adds uncertainty: confirm its construction and closure schedule directly before booking; current sources do not establish a start date.

Best for: Couples exploring Carmel on foot; Families wanting larger rooms; Dog owners booking pet-friendly rooms
Watch out for: Dated furnishings and bathrooms; Stairs and some street noise; Replacement-project timing needs confirmation
Location: In Carmel-by-the-Sea, three blocks north of Ocean Avenue and about eight blocks from the beach.
Rooms: Generally spacious; some have fireplaces, kitchens or ocean views, but finishes show their age.
Cleanliness: Mostly positive across major sites; wear is a more consistent complaint than housekeeping.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the strongest recurring positives.
Amenities: Heated outdoor pool, dry saunas, free Wi-Fi and a light continental breakfast.
Fees and surprises: Parking is free; dog-friendly rooms carry an extra charge; confirm redevelopment timing and accessibility needs.
