Axel's take: 8.9/10

Strong beachfront luxury for pool days and wellness, less suited to a quiet retreat. a nature-inspired five-star beachfront resort with a lively social scene, scored for what it is.

1 Hotel South Beach is a five-star beachfront resort that delivers on the big things: spacious rooms, strong housekeeping, extensive pools and a serious gym. We'd choose it for a luxury beach break with plenty to do without leaving the property. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise comfortable rooms and attentive staff, especially around the beach and pools. The natural-material design gives it a distinctive identity rather than generic resort polish.

The trade-off is scale and social energy: this is a bustling resort, not an intimate hideaway. Some guests find room finishes less polished than the public spaces, though that is not the dominant verdict. A daily resort fee and separately charged valet add to an already premium stay, and the rooftop pool is restricted to guests aged 21 and over. We'd skip it if quiet seclusion or all-inclusive simplicity matters most.

• Best for: couples wanting a lively luxury beach break; fitness and spa enthusiasts; families wanting extensive resort facilities

• Watch out for: daily resort fee and extra valet charges; rooftop pool restricted to ages 21 and over; large-resort bustle rather than intimate seclusion

• Location: Direct beachfront setting on Collins Avenue, with the beachwalk and restaurants nearby.

• Rooms: Spacious and comfortable overall; some guests flag wear or less polished finishes.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guest feedback.

• Service: Predominantly warm, attentive service, with beach and pool teams frequently singled out.

• Amenities: Four pools, a 21-plus rooftop pool, Anatomy gym, Bamford spa, dining and children's programming.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily resort fee; valet costs extra; the fee includes two beach chairs and one umbrella per room.
