#3 of 9 hotels in St Kilda Road & Albert Park by Axel's take. St Kilda Road & Albert Park is #7 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in St Kilda Road & Albert Park, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 8.9/10

A polished boutique choice for couples, with excellent rooms and a few service inconsistencies. An independent 5-star boutique hotel just outside Melbourne’s CBD, scored for what it is.

The Royce is a 5-star boutique hotel in a former luxury-car showroom, and it’s a strong pick for a Melbourne escape with character. Its Art Deco interiors have substance behind them: Booking.com’s cleanliness and comfort scores are particularly strong, while recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the beds, bathrooms and attentive staff. The gardens are nearby, with trams outside for trips into the CBD.

The trade-offs matter at this level. Some Tripadvisor guests report disappointing handling of booking or billing problems, despite overwhelmingly positive feedback elsewhere. There are also reports of weekend function noise, so light sleepers should ask about events and room placement. Entry-level rooms are relatively compact, valet parking costs extra, and there’s no pool or spa. We’d choose it for a couples’ city break, not a facilities-heavy luxury stay.

  • Best for: Couples on a city break; Travelers who appreciate heritage design; Garden walks and tram-based sightseeing

  • Watch out for: Possible noise from private functions; Occasional booking and billing service complaints; No pool or spa

  • Location: Near the Royal Botanic Gardens, outside the CBD core, with convenient tram connections.

  • Rooms: Well-appointed rooms with highly praised beds; entry-level Kings are around 27 square metres.

  • Cleanliness: A standout strength in aggregate ratings and recent guest feedback.

  • Service: Usually warm and attentive, but some guests describe poor handling of problems.

  • Amenities: Restaurant and bar, 24-hour gym and room service; no swimming pool or spa.

  • Fees and surprises: Valet parking is extra; check breakfast inclusions and review the final bill.
