#3 of 4 hotels in Carlton by Axel's take. Carlton is #4 of 9 places to stay in Melbourne. The best hotels in Carlton, ranked · Where to stay in Melbourne

Axel's take: 7.4/10

A practical Carlton base where location beats polish. a simple mid-range apartment hotel just off Lygon Street, scored for what it is.

Formerly Quest Carlton on Finlay, this is now Melbourne Carlton Central: a simple apartment hotel rather than a polished four-star stay. We'd pick it for Carlton's restaurants, useful self-catering facilities and the extra living space in one- and two-bedroom apartments. Recent Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the location, comfortable beds and helpful staff.

The compromise is condition: furnishings and fittings can feel tired, and cleanliness feedback is less consistent across sites than the positive Expedia reviews suggest. Noise also bothers some guests, though others report quiet stays. Reception is not 24-hour, so arrange late arrival beforehand; parking costs extra and is limited. It's a sensible choice for independent travelers prioritizing location and cooking facilities, but we'd skip it for a special occasion or consistently modern rooms.

Best for: self-catering city breaks; families wanting separate bedrooms; Carlton dining and university visits
Watch out for: dated furnishings and uneven room condition; possible street and rubbish-collection noise; limited reception hours and paid parking
Location: The standout: just off Lygon Street, convenient for restaurants, Melbourne Museum and the university.
Rooms: Studios have kitchenettes; larger apartments add separate living space and full kitchens, but decor shows its age.
Cleanliness: Recent Expedia guests often praise clean rooms, but Booking.com's lower cleanliness score suggests uneven standards.
Service: Helpful staff receive repeated praise; official reception hours are shorter on Sundays, so plan late arrivals.
Amenities: Practical rather than extensive: free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, lift access, cooking facilities and apartment laundry facilities.
Fees and surprises: Confirm paid parking directly because listings disagree; card surcharges apply, and housekeeping excludes Sundays and public holidays.
