Axel's take: 8.7/10

Warm service and excellent facilities make this classic luxury hotel worth considering despite dated rooms. a traditional 5-star business hotel in central Makati, scored for what it is.

Makati Shangri-La is a traditional 5-star business hotel whose strongest assets are its staff and central location. We'd choose it for attentive hospitality, comfortable rooms and easy access to Greenbelt and Glorietta. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the housekeeping, welcoming service and extensive breakfast buffet. It's a strong luxury option if you care more about comfort than contemporary design.

The main compromise is the room condition: several guests describe dated furnishings and bathrooms, even while praising cleanliness. The outdoor pool, substantial gym, tennis courts and spa give it more substance than just a grand lobby, though some guests report crowded facilities and breakfast periods. We'd skip it if freshly renovated interiors are essential; otherwise, the service and location make a persuasive case.

• Best for: business travelers based in Makati; shoppers exploring Greenbelt and Glorietta; travelers who prefer classic luxury

• Watch out for: dated furnishings and bathroom fixtures; busy breakfast and wellness periods

• Location: Central business-district setting, within walking distance of Greenbelt and Glorietta.

• Rooms: Comfortable and generally spacious, but recurring feedback points to dated interiors.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall: Booking.com rates cleanliness 9.4, consistent with frequent recent praise.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring strength across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, well-equipped gym, tennis courts, spa and several dining venues.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is extra unless included; airport transfers and rollaway beds carry charges. Expedia lists free parking.
