Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical budget base for city visits, provided you can accept cramped, dated rooms. a no-frills 3-star on the Salford edge of Manchester city centre, scored for what it is.

Stay Inn is a no-frills 3-star on the Salford edge of Manchester city centre, and we'd consider it for a short, budget-minded visit rather than a leisurely hotel break. The location puts Deansgate and AO Arena within roughly 15 minutes' walk. Recent Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful reception staff; Expedia feedback also highlights friendly service while acknowledging dated decor. It's a useful base when you'll spend most of your time out.

The compromises are space and polish: bedrooms and especially shower rooms are often described as small, and some guests report intrusive noise between rooms. There's no lift, so confirm a suitable room before booking if stairs are difficult. Parking and breakfast cost extra, and the hotel also flags a visitor levy. We'd skip it for a longer stay if generous space, modern interiors or dependable quiet matter most.

• Best for: budget-conscious city visitors; AO Arena concertgoers; short stays with a car

• Watch out for: small bedrooms and tight shower rooms; dated decor and possible room-to-room noise; no lift

• Location: Walkable to Deansgate, AO Arena and central shopping, rather than right in the busiest centre.

• Rooms: Basic and frequently described as cramped; beds draw praise, but decor and sound insulation are weaker.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength in recent feedback, supported by solid Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness scores.

• Service: Helpful, friendly reception staff are a recurring positive across guest-review sources.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, a restaurant, residents' bar, cooked breakfast and limited on-site parking.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and breakfast are extra; a visitor levy applies, and Booking.com lists a refundable damage deposit.
