#9 of 9 hotels in Victoria & Cathedral Quarter by Axel's take. Victoria & Cathedral Quarter is #5 of 7 places to stay in Manchester. The best hotels in Victoria & Cathedral Quarter, ranked · Where to stay in Manchester

Axel's take: 6.4/10

Excellent location and welcoming staff, but rooms and sleep quality are a gamble. A basic 3-star pub hotel in Manchester’s historic city centre, scored for what it is.

The Mitre is a basic 3-star pub hotel beside Manchester Cathedral, best considered for a short, location-first stay. Shopping, Victoria station and AO Arena are conveniently close. Booking.com’s overall rating is stronger than Tripadvisor’s, while recent guests across several sites repeatedly praise the friendly staff. Some find their rooms clean, comfortable and good value; others describe a distinctly tired property.

The drawbacks go beyond old-fashioned décor. Recent reviews repeatedly mention intrusive noise, uneven housekeeping and unreliable hot water, including otherwise positive stays. There is no lift or ground-floor accommodation, and some room categories share bathrooms. We’d consider it for an unfussy overnight after a concert, but skip it for reliable quiet, step-free access or consistently well-maintained rooms. Confirm your bathroom arrangement before booking.

  • Best for: Unfussy concertgoers; Short, location-first city breaks

  • Watch out for: Bar, street and internal noise; Uneven cleanliness and hot-water reliability; Stairs only; some shared bathrooms

  • Location: Beside the cathedral, with central shopping, Victoria station and AO Arena conveniently close.

  • Rooms: Variable condition and comfort; some categories have shared bathrooms or no window.

  • Cleanliness: Mixed reports: clean rooms earn praise, but recent housekeeping complaints recur.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, though problem handling gets mixed feedback.

  • Amenities: Pub, restaurant, breakfast, free Wi-Fi and 24-hour reception; no lift or ground-floor rooms.

  • Fees and surprises: No on-site parking; breakfast inclusion varies, and Booking.com lists a refundable cash damage deposit.
